ABOUT

For the Azalea Regional Shopping Center in South Gate, Nadel Architects was commissioned to transform a massive 32-acre site into a retail destination that defies regional architectural tropes. Rejecting standard themes and artifice, Nadel developed a unique architectural language rooted in geometric honesty and material expression. The project represents a new generation of lifestyle centers where authenticity, innovative retail concepts, and community integration converge.

A cornerstone of the project’s identity is its commitment to sustainability and "Living Architecture." Azalea features the largest outdoor installation of a living wall on the West Coast to date, effectively blurring the line between the built environment and the natural landscape. This feature, combined with the use of repurposed barn wood siding and energy-efficient systems, was designed with the goal of achieving LEED certification from the US Green Building Council, signaling Nadel's leadership in environmentally responsible commercial design.

Spanning 370,000 square feet, the center was designed to speak to the aspirations of South Gate’s evolving population. By eliminating traditional architectural simulations, such as foam cornices or faux second floors, Nadel created a space that is "true to its materials." The result is a vibrant, modern town square that has successfully revitalized a significant portion of the Los Angeles landscape, offering a unique visitor experience that cannot be found elsewhere in Southern California.
